An American Haunting   «run away, fast»

Oh my goodness this movie sucked. And the ending? What the hell was that? The ghost who's haunting and terrorizing her is dead innocence? What the hell?
Where: at home via Netflix
Date: March 23, 2007
Summary: Based on the true events of the only case in US History where a spirit caused the death of a man. (from imdb.com)

«absolutely necessary»   Reign Over Me

I know the idea of Adam Sandler acting seriously is strange, but he was so good in this movie it was unbelievable. I really think that everyone who sees this movie will leave having cried and having a different view of Adam Sandler Where: 66th & 2nd Ave, Manhattan
Date: March 23, 2007
Summary: A man (Sandler) who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City runs into his old college roommate (Cheadle). Rekindling the friendship is the one thing that appears able to help the man recover from his grief. (from imdb.com)

SherryBaby   «recommended»

I've loved Maggie Gyllenhaal since seeing her in Donnie Darko, and her acting in SherryBaby is brilliant. This may be considered the run-of-the-mill indie flick, but it is touching and moving nonetheless.
Where: at home via Netflix
Date: March 21, 2007
Summary: Sherry Swanson returns home to New Jersey after serving a three-year prison sentence. Eager to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter, Sherry soon discovers that coming back to the world she left behind is far more difficult than she had planned. (from imdb.com)

«recommended»   Born Into Brothels

Interesting documentary idea centered around the children of brothel workers. I loved the photographs of the children interspersed within the film.
Where: at home via Netflix
Date: March 15, 2007
Summary: Two documentary filmmakers chronicle their time in Sonagchi, Calcutta and the relationships they developed with children of prostitutes who work the city's notorious red light district. (from imdb.com)
Quotes: "There is nothing called hope in my future."

American Dreamz   «run away, fast»

I watched this with my best friend last night purely because we were drunk and had either seen or didn't want to see everything in my DVD collection. It was not so good.
Where: at home, via OnDemand
Date: March 11, 2007
Summary: Imagine a country where the President never reads the newspaper, where the government goes to war for all the wrong reasons, and more people vote for a pop idol than their next President. (from imdb.com)
Quotes: "I want an Arab. And a Jew. I want an Arab and a Jew." / "How about... An Arab-Jew?"

«ordinary»   Land of the Dead

I thought this was going to be much more of a scary movie than it was. It wasn't terrible, just not really what I define as a horror flick. Where: at home via Netflix
Date: March 9, 2007
Summary: The living dead have taken over the world, and the last humans live in a walled city to protect themselves as they come to grips with the situation. (from imdb.com)
Quotes: "Looks like God left the phone off the hook."

300   «recommended»

Visually stunning movie, but that got old for after about five minutes. The three thirteen year olds and their chaperone laughing at the sex scene, however, was priceless.
Where: UA 64th St and 2nd Ave, Manhattan
Date: March 9, 2007
Summary: Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel about the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. (from imdb.com)

«ordinary»   Grey Gardens

It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't fantastic. It was depressing, though, to see two women living in such filth and stress with each other.
Where: at home via Netflix
Date: March 3, 2007
Summary: The Maysles brothers pay visits to Edith Bouvier Beale, nearing 80, and her daughter Edie. Reclusive, the pair live with cats and raccoons in Grey Gardens, a crumbling mansion in East Hampton. Edith is dry and quick-witted - a singer, married but later separated, a member of high society. Edie is voluble, dresses - as she puts it - for combat in tight ensembles that include scarves wrapped around her head. There are hints that Edie came home 24 years before to be cared for rather than to care for her mother. The women address the camera, talking over each other, moving from the present to events years before. They're odd, with flinty affection for each other. (from imdb.com)
Quotes: "Will you shut up? It's a goddamn beautiful day, shut up!"

Gods and Monsters   «absolutely necessary»

This was an amazing movie about two men from totally different backgrounds creating a mutual affection for each other.
Where: at home via Netflix
Date: March 3, 2007
Summary: The last days of Frankenstein director James Whale are explored. (from imdb.com)
Quotes: "This is my gardener Clayton Boone. He's never met a princess before, only queens."
"He's noble. Noble and misunderstood."

«recommended»   Zodiac

I remember a woman saying on my way out of the theater that she didn't like that the movie didn't have any closure. Seeing as how the damn thing was based on a true serial killer, how could they have closure when we still don't really know who the Zodiac Killer was? Anyway, it was a good, funny movie, full of great actors.
Where: 66th & 1st Ave, Manhattan
Date: March 2, 2007
Summary: Based on the Robert Graysmith books about the real life notorious Zodiac, a serial killer who terrorized San Francisco with a string of seemingly random murders during the 1960s and 1970s. (from imdb.com)
Quotes: "Methinks our friend is a tad fuckered in the head."
