Dreamgirls   «recommended»

Just a nota bene: If you don't like musicals, you ain't gonna like this movie. Everyone knows Jennifer Hudson can sing, but she can act pretty well too. She isn't a Glenn Close, but for a musical, she's pretty good. The entire cast is pretty good, and seeing the film in the cinema, I almost felt like I was seeing a live Broadway show; without paying a hundred dollars, of course.
Where: Clearview First & 62nd, Manhattan
Date: January 16, 2007
Summary: Based on the 1981 Broadway musical comes Dreamgirls, a story of greed, tough hate, and romance. Three young women - Deena Jones, Effie White, and Lorrell Robinson - desire to become pop stars and get their wish when they're picked to be backup singers for the legendary James "Thunder" Early. Then they're set free for leads, but Curtis Taylor and Effie's brother C.C. decide for Deena to be lead which upsets Effie. (from imdb.com)
Quotes: "It's about fairness, Curtis. It's about people paying their dues. Isn't that what you keep telling me? "Get in line, Effie. Wait your turn". So why am I sitting here without so much as a B-side on a 45, when an amateur like Martin Luther King Jr. gets his own freaking album? I mean, can he even sing?"
"Deena, you know why I chose you to sing lead? Because your voice... has no personality. No depth. Except for what I put in there."
